Written with the same honesty and passion that made the first volume of Harry S. Truman's memoirs - 1945 Year of Decision - so compelling, this book explores in detail the extraordinary problems the president had to face in the years after World War II.

Truman recounts the story of the explosive China situation and George Marshall's patient and brilliant handling of it - and examines the creation of the Truman Doctrine, the history of the Marshall Plan, the Berlin airlift, and the enormously complicated problem of creating a Jewish homeland.

The climax of Years of Trial and Hope comes with Truman's dramatic discussion of the Korean War and his dismissal of General Douglas MacArthur for repeatedly refusing to follow orders from both the Joints Chiefs of Staff and the president himself.

He also talks about his decision to not run for the presidency in 1952, offering his strong opinions about the Stevenson and Eisenhower campaigns, and concluding with a memorable account of his White House meeting with President-elect Eisenhower shortly before the end of his term.

Filled with astute observations of major historical events and the leaders who shaped them, Truman offers readers an incisive look at postwar American history.

194652 Years of Trial and Hope eBook Harry S Truman

This is a memoir more than a history. Where memoirs of, say, Henry Kissinger are sometimes more beautifully written, this memoir is always clear, concise, honest and pointed, like Harry Truman himself. There is a touch of anti-Republican partisanship and even some excessive modesty, both of which accurately reflect the voice of Harry Truman himself. Since the book was written for Truman's contemporaries, the book will be most enjoyed by students of the history of the time, who are familiar with the players like Taft, Vandenburg, and Eisenhower, but the book is accessible enogh to be very enjoyable to almost anyone.

194652 Years of Trial and Hope eBook Harry S Truman Reviews

President Truman tends to include an excess of detail about some events (e.g. the name of every attendee at every meeting), and occasionally seems unnecessarily defensive but there is no substitute for his first person recounting of events. Anyone interested in the period will benefit from reading this volume.
Very informative, well-written account of President Truman's version of events during that time. This book provided insight into his character and what he thought the purpose of government was. He also took great pains to explain how he arrived at his decisions. Even though I disagreed with many of his policies, his willingness to hear all the sides of an issue before deciding impressed me. He was an honest man who was not afraid to make tough decisions to do what he thought was best for the American people. He was loyal to his friends, and gave credit to his opponents if he thought they were opposed to him honestly. Of course, there was very little negativity or second-guessing of his own decisions, but that is to be expected in an autobiography. It did change my opinion about the advisability of electing to the highest office in the land someone without a good deal of political experience, because things don't get done the same way as they do in business or the military.

I found it interesting that he felt that the press was, for the most part, in league with the Republicans in opposing him and failed to report the truth impartially, since today it seems the opposite (and yet the same); the press today appears to be in league with the President, but still fails to report the truth impartially. I wish he had spent more time on the Communist threat, and why he thought it was primarily partisan politics, since it has since been shown that Communists had actually infiltrated the highest levels of government.

Overall, a good book well worth reading by anyone interested in the period.
A person can agree or disagree with the politics of the Truman Administration, but what I found most important was Truman's telling of the situations in which he found himself, and based upon his interpretations of the problems, how and why he responded to them. Truman dealt with a number of instances of when were of great historical significance. I personally felt there were some incidents in when he erred, however that is irrelevant as I was looking for the facts around the history of his presidency.
I have not yet finished this book, but I enjoyed the one before which started the day Truman became president and finished with the end of 1945. I was truly impressed with the depth of his preparation for government service from Congressman to the Presidency, and I was fascinated with the thought processes that preceded his decisions.

Everyone who is interested in government and with candidates fitness to be high officials should read this account by and of a man who always did his homework and based his decisions on sound reasoning.
This book is an amazing insight into history. So much of our modern world was determined at this time. Parts of the book are too long and detailed on matters that have become of little historic consequence, therefore some chapters can be skipped. However, other parts, including the Korean War, the creation of Israel, the creation of the United Nations and the beginning of the cold war are outstanding. His relationships with Eisenhower and MacArthur are also excellent. Truman does not discuss the White House renovation, the assassination attempt, or the insider financial scandal of his administration. This book is required reading for any student of 20th century history or anyone who claims to understand our current world. There are some uncanny parallels with 2014. My opinion of Truman has risen greatly.
The second volume of Truman's memoir continues the account of his presidency. He opens the doors to his policies and explains his decision making process more fully as he establishes his presidency. Truman presents his arguments for a liberal political stance, yet pursues bipartisan legislation rather than depending upon executive orders. The tensions and differences between the parties (Democrat and Republican) take shape as the war-weary nation reacts to the challenges of the Soviet deceit and the Middle East erupts in violence. Sounds very much like 2016. Perhaps we could learn more about ourselves and our differences by listening to one president's agenda and what it produced in both its achievements and its failures. As a student of history, Truman himself did not always learn from history and took steps that adversely affects our nation's history to this day.
Long winded and dry. They say history repeats itself. Maybe, at any rate Harry certainly does. Nonetheless, the events chronicled represent a very critical period in our nation's history. Being told from the perspective of the chief executive makes it even more relevant.

President Truman had to deal with Russia, China and Korea in tense situations that could have resulted in WW-III. Planning for the coming atomic age, a steel industry strike, a rogue General MacArthur, legislative conflicts, and lack of Supreme Court backing. What more could a President desire.
